Whole House Remodel (2000-2001)      Private Residence- Averill Park, N. Y.

This home was once a passive solar contemporary complete with thermal storage walls and roof water heating panels. The broad strokes of the plan included additions to the west in front, a new entry patio, new deck, and raising most of the roof (the roof ridge was raised six feet). The total window count went from the original 12 to 74 admitting dramatically more light. The wall insulation was increased to R-40 and the ceiling is R-55 to offset the triple glazed Pella windows (which are almost R-4.5).

The new plan has the following features all in a light arts and crafts style: an 'indoor garden room' which houses the plants in the winter that come in from the rear decks and portico; a two and half story living room in cherry and black steel; new kitchen; new 'sunset room' to the west; enlarged master suite, all new windows, roofing and siding. Even the basement was significantly altered to take advantage of the additional foundation space.

Cherry is featured prominently throughout the house. The kitchen is a mix of cherry frames and maple doors with granite counters. The trim was all hand selected for color. The garden room is D select cedar stained to blend with the cherry and the pine on all the windows has a different stain to match the cherry floors, doors and trim. All of the cabinetry was custom made to the owner's specifications.

This work was begun in May 2000 and completed in August 2001.
